5-a-Side Fitness: Do You Need to Be Fit to Play?
· 4 min read · KIKOFF Football

You do not need to be fit to start playing. 5 a side fitness is something you build by turning up, not something you need before your first game. KIKOFF runs social weeknight football in Sydney, with caged 5-a-side at Canterbury (Lakemba) and Northern Beaches (Curl Curl), both open year-round. Games are short, teams rotate players, and divisions are set up for mixed ability. Team entry in our Northern Beaches adult leagues is $1,700.
Am I fit enough for 5 a side?
Almost certainly, yes. Social 5-a-side is a small-sided game, not a test. Nobody is timing your laps and nobody expects you to run the whole night.
The format helps you. The pitch is small, so you are never far from the ball. Games are short. You will feel it in your lungs at first, and that is normal. It settles as you play more.
If you have a health condition or you are unsure about exercise in general, talk to your own doctor before you start. We cannot advise on that.
What is 5-a-side football?
5-a-side is small-sided football played on a compact pitch with a handful of players per team, built around lots of touches and quick play.

How KIKOFF keeps it social, not scary
Social football fitness comes down to three things: short games, rolling substitutions and the right division.
- Short games. You play in bursts, not a full-length match. Our league game rules cover how a night runs.
- Rolling subs. Teams can rest players and bring them back. If you need a breather, you can take one without leaving your team short.
- Mixed-ability divisions. Our divisions and grades are set up so that people of similar standards play each other. Beginners can start at the lower end.
5 a side for unfit players: where to start
If you are carrying a bit of rust, choose your entry point with care.
Pick a lower division
Look for the lower divisions and the more relaxed grades. Examples in our current Northern Beaches line-up include Thursday Mens 6, Wednesday Mixed KIKOFF and Tuesday Over 40s Mixed. Wednesday Ladies 3/4 and Tuesday Ladies 1/2 sit in the women's grades. At Eastern Suburbs, which is 6-a-side on open pitches, the divisions run from Div 1 to Div 3.
Try an open game first
If you do not have a team, or you want a low-pressure taste, start with an open game. You can see how the pace feels before you commit to anything bigger.
Choose the venue that suits you
Canterbury is caged, so the ball stays in play off the walls. That means fewer stoppages and a lively game. Northern Beaches is also caged, with futsal line markings, so you can play soccer or futsal. Both are floodlit synthetic.

The bookable bit: current leagues
These Northern Beaches 5-a-side competitions are run with our partner NBFA. Registration is open. Each one starts Monday 7 September 2026 and finishes Sunday 20 December 2026.
| Competition | Night | Team entry |
|---|---|---|
| Monday Over 35 Mens | Monday | $1,700 |
| Tuesday Over 40s Mixed | Tuesday | $1,700 |
| Wednesday Mixed KIKOFF | Wednesday | $1,700 |
| Thursday Mens 6 | Thursday | $1,700 |
Eastern Suburbs leagues run September to December only, and those seasons are already under way. Individual entry there is $295 in the Div 1, Div 2 and Div 3 competitions that take individuals.
Team or individual, and what happens on the night
Most Northern Beaches adult leagues take team registration. If you are new, ask a few mates and enter together. That keeps the pressure low because you already know the people around you. Eastern Suburbs also takes individual entry if you would rather join solo.
On the night, turn up a little early, warm up gently and play. Bring water, shin guards and the right shoes. Our guide on what to wear to 5-a-side football in Sydney covers the detail. Pace yourself, use your subs and enjoy it.
FAQs
Do I need to be fit to play 5-a-side?
No. Social 5-a-side is built for people of all levels. Games are short, teams rotate players, and divisions are set up so you play people of a similar standard. Fitness comes with playing regularly, and you can set your own pace on the night.
Can unfit players join a social league?
Yes. Choose a lower division or a mixed or over-age grade, and use your team's rolling substitutions to catch your breath. Start with an open game if you want to test the pace first. Nobody expects you to run flat out all night.
Are there rolling subs in 5-a-side?
Teams can rotate players during a night, so you can rest and return without leaving your side short. Check the league game rules for how substitutions work in your competition before your first game.
Which division should a beginner pick?
Pick the lower end of the divisions on offer, or a mixed or over-age grade. Examples at Northern Beaches include Thursday Mens 6 and Wednesday Mixed KIKOFF. If you are unsure, contact the venue and tell them your experience level.
Is there a way to try it without a team?
Yes. Open games are the easiest way in. You can turn up, see how the game feels and meet people without organising a squad. If you like it, you can build a team for a league later.
Where can I play 5-a-side in Sydney with KIKOFF?
Canterbury (Lakemba) and Northern Beaches (Curl Curl) both have caged 5-a-side pitches and are open year-round. Eastern Suburbs (Eastgardens) is 6-a-side on open pitches and runs September to December only.
