5-a-side vs 11-a-side: What Changes After Winter

5-a-side vs 11-a-side: the short answer
Club football wraps up in August. That is your Saturday ritual, your association, your MiniRoos or senior grade, played on a full pitch with 11 players a side. From September, a lot of that same energy shifts to 5-a-side and 6-a-side football on weeknights. Same sport, smaller pitch, fewer players, less standing around. If you are wondering whether 5-a-side is a downgrade from 11-a-side or just a different game, it is the second one. Here is what actually changes, and who each format suits.
What is 5-a-side, exactly
5-a-side football is a small-sided format played on a shrunk pitch with five players per team, usually including a goalkeeper. Games are shorter than 11-a-side, subs roll on and off freely, and most social versions drop offside completely. It is built for weeknights: turn up, play hard for the match, go home. That is the core of 5 a side football explained in one sentence — less space, less stoppage, more touches.
Pitch, players, and game length: the real differences
Winter club football is played outdoors on a full-size pitch, 11 versus 11, with a ref enforcing offside, throw-ins, and long stoppages for set pieces. It rewards positional discipline and fitness across 90 minutes.
5-a-side and 6-a-side flip that. At KIKOFF Canterbury in Lakemba, pitches are caged and floodlit — the ball stays in play off the walls instead of going out for a throw-in, so the game barely stops. At KIKOFF Northern Beaches in Curl Curl, pitches run on futsal-style rules with kick-ins from the line rather than a cage. At KIKOFF Eastern Suburbs in Eastgardens, it is 6-a-side on open, uncaged pitches with kick-in restarts — one extra player each way, still no offside, still built for weeknight pace.
No offside means no need for a flat back line and no arguments with a linesman who does not exist. Rolling subs mean nobody sits out a half nursing a niggle. Games are shorter, so intensity goes up and standing around goes down. It is a different skill set: quick control, quick decisions, less time on the ball.
Cost per person vs club fees
Club football fees are usually an annual or seasonal registration through your association, paid once for the whole winter. Social 5-a-side and 6-a-side work differently — most competitions here take either a team entry or an individual spot, so you can rock up solo or bring a full side.
For adult social competitions, individual entry sits around $295 for a season, with team entry priced per competition (from $1,500 up to $1,800 depending on venue and format). Northern Beaches team competitions run with our partner NBFA and are priced at $1,700 per team, or $210–$250 individually depending on the age group. It is a smaller, more frequent outlay than club football, tied to a single format and season rather than a whole year of club membership.
Who suits which
Club football is the pathway. It is where kids progress through age grades, where adults play in a structured competition with a full pitch and a proper finals series, and where the Saturday ritual lives. Nothing here replaces that.
5-a-side and 6-a-side are the weeknight habit. If winter club football is done for the season and you want to keep playing without waiting for April, or if you just want one regular game a week without the commitment of a club season, this is built for you. Plenty of players do both — club in winter, social small-sided the rest of the year, or both side by side.
What's on right now
Adult competitions are open across all three venues. At Eastern Suburbs, 6-a-side mens, ladies and mixed divisions run Monday to Thursday from Monday 28 September 2026 to Friday 18 December 2026, team entry $1,800 or individual entry $295. At Canterbury, 5-a-side mens and mixed competitions run Monday to Friday from Monday 14 September 2026 to Sunday 29 November 2026, team entry $1,500 or individual entry $295. At Northern Beaches, 5-a-side adult competitions with our partner NBFA run Monday to Thursday from Monday 7 September 2026 to Sunday 20 December 2026, team entry $1,700.
How to get on the pitch
You do not need a full team. Register as an individual and you will be placed into a side, or bring seven or eight mates and lock in a team entry. Bring boots suited to synthetic turf, shin pads, and a light and dark top since bibs are not always guaranteed. Turn up ten minutes before kick-off to find your pitch and meet your team if you are playing as an individual. Games run back to back through the night, so know your kick-off time and get there early.
FAQs
What is the main difference between 5-a-side and 11-a-side football?
Pitch size, player numbers, and rules. 11-a-side is played on a full pitch with offside and set stoppages for throw-ins. 5-a-side uses a smaller pitch, rolling subs, and generally drops offside, which keeps the game faster and more continuous.
Is 5-a-side good practice for 11-a-side club football?
It sharpens close control, quick passing, and decision-making under pressure, all useful in the bigger game. It will not replace positional structure or fitness for 90 minutes, but plenty of club players use weeknight 5-a-side to stay sharp between seasons.
Do I need a team to play 5-a-side or 6-a-side?
No. Most competitions in this block take individual registrations as well as team entries, so you can sign up solo and be placed into a side. Bringing a full team is also an option if you would rather play with people you know.
Is there offside in 5-a-side or 6-a-side social football?
No. Social small-sided football at these venues does not use offside. Combined with rolling subs, that keeps the game open and fast, without a linesman's flag interrupting play.
What happens to club football once winter finishes?
Winter club football, including association and MiniRoos competitions, runs April to August and pauses over summer. Clubs restart in April. Many players and kids move to weeknight small-sided football from September through summer to keep playing in between seasons.
How much does it cost to play social football compared to club fees?
Club fees are usually one annual or seasonal payment through your association. Social small-sided competitions here charge per season too, with individual adult entry around $295 or team entry from $1,500 to $1,800 depending on venue and format, separate from club registration.
Which KIKOFF venue is caged and which is open pitch?
Canterbury in Lakemba is caged 5-a-side, where the ball stays in play off the walls. Eastern Suburbs in Eastgardens is open, uncaged 6-a-side with kick-in restarts. Northern Beaches in Curl Curl is open 5-a-side on futsal-style line markings, also with kick-ins.
