How to register for winter soccer in Sydney

If you are working out how to register for winter soccer Sydney families go through their local association, not a single central club. Most Sydney associations open registrations in January for a season that usually kicks off around the second weekend of April, with some MiniRoos age groups starting the first weekend of April. Exact dates vary by association, so always check with them directly. This guide walks you through the general steps, then looks at what to do with your kid between seasons — including a term of coaching, a summer league, or a regular weeknight game at KIKOFF Canterbury.

What winter club football actually is

Winter club football is Sydney's traditional 11-a-side season, run through associations affiliated with Football NSW, and it runs April to August. It sits alongside programs like MiniRoos for younger kids. KIKOFF does not replace this — our leagues and camps run midweek and through summer, so your child can keep playing without missing club football.

Step 1: find your local association

Sydney is divided into geographic football associations. In the Canterbury area that is Football Canterbury. Eastern suburbs families typically register through ESFA. Families further west may fall under MWFA. Your address determines which association your child registers with, not which club shirt you like. If you are unsure, search the Play Football platform by postcode — it is the national registration system used across NSW junior and senior football, and it will point you to the right association and clubs in your area.

Step 2: use Play Football and check Active Kids

Registration for winter soccer is done through the Play Football website or app. You create a profile for your child, select the association and club, choose the age group, and pay the season fee. NSW families can also apply the Active Kids voucher toward registration costs — check with your association on how to apply it at checkout, and see our general guide to the Active Kids voucher for how it typically works.

Step 3: know the rough timing

Associations generally open registrations in January. Round 1 of the winter season usually falls around the second weekend of April, though some MiniRoos age groups in some associations start the first weekend of April. Treat these as general patterns, not fixed dates — always confirm with your specific association, since timing differs year to year and area to area.

Where KIKOFF fits around club football

KIKOFF is not a replacement for winter club football. We are the midweek and summer program that keeps kids playing between seasons, or alongside them if a family wants extra touches on the ball. At KIKOFF Canterbury we run caged 5-a-side junior leagues across a full spread of age groups, from U6 through U16, both boys and girls divisions, with games on weeknights. These start Monday 12 October 2026 and run through to Wednesday 31 March 2027, which covers the whole gap before next winter's registrations open. Team entry is $1,000 and individual entry is $200, with both team and individual registration accepted.

If your child is younger, KIKOFF Canterbury also hosts Little Kickers sessions for ages 1.5 to 8, on Saturdays, priced at $92 per term. At KIKOFF Northern Beaches, Little Kickers runs on Sundays and Wednesdays for ages 2.5 to 5, priced at $90 per term. Northern Beaches also has Spring Holiday Camps for U6 to U11 from Monday 28 September 2026 to Friday 9 October 2026, priced at $225 per week or $75 per day — handy for the September–October school holidays.

FAQs

When do winter soccer registrations open in Sydney?

Most Sydney associations open registrations in January for the season ahead. Exact opening dates vary by association, so check directly with your local club or the Play Football platform for confirmed dates rather than relying on a general timeframe.

When does round 1 of winter soccer start?

Round 1 typically falls around the second weekend of April, with some MiniRoos age groups in some associations starting the first weekend of April. This is a general pattern across Sydney associations, not a fixed date, so confirm with your specific association.

How do I know which association my child registers with?

Your home address determines your local football association. Search the Play Football platform by postcode to find the association and clubs covering your area, whether that is Football Canterbury, ESFA, MWFA, or another Sydney association.

Can I use the Active Kids voucher for winter soccer registration?

NSW families can generally apply the Active Kids voucher toward registration fees for eligible sport programs, including football. Check with your association on how to apply the voucher at checkout. See our help article on the Active Kids voucher for general guidance.

What does my child do for football between winter seasons?

Many Sydney kids move to midweek small-sided football or holiday camps once winter club football wraps up in August, then return to club football when it restarts in April. KIKOFF Canterbury runs junior leagues through this exact gap, from October through to the end of March.

Does KIKOFF replace club football?

No. KIKOFF sits alongside club football, not against it. Our junior leagues, coaching sessions and holiday camps run midweek and through summer, giving kids a regular game or extra coaching without clashing with their winter club season.

What is the difference between MiniRoos and 5-a-side formats?

MiniRoos is a modified version of club football for younger age groups within the winter association season, while 5-a-side formats like KIKOFF's junior leagues are standalone small-sided competitions. Read our comparison of MiniRoos vs 5-a-side for a fuller breakdown of the differences.

Once your child is registered with their local association for winter, sort out what keeps them playing the rest of the year. Have a look at KIKOFF Canterbury junior leagues for weeknight football that runs right through to next season, or explore our coaching programs if you are after a term of skills-building instead.
